The Smoothest Dog Ever (Online, too!)

Wait, I can't hear you! Turn your microphone on. Try again.

Phew, I don't think I have ever been happier about Christmas break than this year! I got my human to come out and play with me in the snow, too. Many times! Yeay!

Oh yeah, I'm also looking forward to the New Year snow games. Except for the fireworks that some humans seem to need so much.

My New Year's wish is that you all could also take me into consideration when planning your online meetings and online lessons for the next semester. You see, for one, I can't see all colours very well.

I could smell everything VERY well indeed, but for some reason the screen sharing doesn't include scent sharing. Now why is that? Didn't anyone consider us dogs when planning this system?

Well, usually I fall asleep under the desk and just snore at your meetings, anyhow.

And then, you know, sometimes it is SOOO hard to just sit still in front of the screen for long periods of time! Oh, boy! I'd just much rather go and play outside.

The only thing that keeps me in front of the screen is when my human takes me into her lap and strokes me. That really speaks to me about caring. The stuff you mostly do in your online meetings and lessons, on the screen, not so much.

Now, why couldn't you just show some of your care (and I know you care!) for example by using more images, the kind that I love, too, and get excited about, like chasing and hunting and all that. Then I'm all in!

Sometimes when I'm all ears and all excited, I try to participate in the chat, but it's a bit hard with my paws and all, to try to use the keyboard. It's so hard not to be able to just wag my tail so you could see it, and lick your hand a bit, too. I think that online I get misunderstood quite a bit... I mean, come on, how could anyone ever misunderstand me! I am the smoothest dog EVER.

Embracing Zen and Integrity in the Age of AI

In the photo: Rekku the dog, my Zen master. As we step into the new academic year, many of us instructors, researchers, administrators may feel fairly burdened and overstretched before we have even started. We carry the weight of demands and change that may feel relentless. Yet beneath that fatigue lies a spark: a deep longing for meaningful work and for a peaceful, restful mindset in it all. There’s no better moment than now to rejuvenate our purpose, find our Zen, and remind ourselves why our work matters. Voices from the field: OER25 in London This past June, the 16th Annual Open Education Conference (OER25) unfolded in London, under the stirring theme “ Speaking Truth to Power: Open Education and AI in the Age of Populism ”. The gathering invited the participants to examine the intersections of open pedagogy, technology, and social justice, recognising that open education isn’t just about access or resources, but about agency, equity, and integrity in turbulent times ...

Digital Universities Europe: Caring Transcends Time and Place

THE (Times Higher Education) Digital Universities Europe 2023 conference took place in Barcelona, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, on 23-25 October 2023. The programme included a wide range of pedagogical, digital support, e-learning support and pedagogical leadership perspectives. The conference had a pleasant balance between keynotes, presentations, and panel discussions, with good breaks and time for networking, booth visits and discussions. Above all, the experience of place and time on campus and the programme’s arts and culture immersion felt invigoratingly holistic, taking into account the embodied nature of the human being. There was also room for multiple voices and views to be expressed. The humanistic and human-centred perspectives and the atmosphere conducive to critical and creative thinking was noticeable, as if flowing through the spaces, lights and sounds of Gaudí’s nature-inspired architecture into our digital reflections. Leading pioneers in the field of digital ...

Miten toimintatavat muovaavat oppimisympäristöä? Välittämisen pedagogiikka ja alkuperäiskansojen viisaus

Stonehenge, jota voidaan pitää kulttuurin tuotoksena. Entä sen rakentamisen prosessit, protokollat, syyt, konteksti? Kuva: Pixabay.   Viisaus ei ole kulttuurin tuotoksissa, vaan kulttuurin prosesseissa ja protokollissa. (Yunkaporta 2023,  Right Story, Wrong Story: Adventures in Indigenous Thinking , s. 201, oma suomennos). Tämän lainauksen myötä haluan kutsua meidät pohtimaan siitä, miten hahmotamme vuorovaikutuksen, ihmissuhteiden ja välittämisen merkityksen opetustyössä. Maailmassa, jossa usein keskitytään vain valmiisiin lopputuloksiin (siihen, mitä luomme, mitä tuotamme, mitä luulemme tietävämme, mitä käytämme, esim. kirjoja, tekstejä, taidetta, musiikkia, jne.), Yunkaporta muistuttaa meitä siitä, että todellista viisautta ei pidä etsiä kulttuurin tuotoksista, vaan tuotoksia toisintavista vuorovaikutteisista järjestelmistä. Yunkaporta käyttää termiä protokolla viitatessaan tällaisiin toimintatapoihin ja käytäntöihin, joita kuhunkin Australian alkuperäiskansaan kuu...
